Ready-made garment workers have called off their strike and removed their blockade from the roads in Mirpur's Kalshi and Sawrapara areas of Dhaka, upon receiving assurances from the owners of meeting their demands.
The workers began demonstrating around 9am on Thursday for the fifth consecutive day, demanding changes to a newly-announced wage structure.
Later, they disbanded around 10:30 from Kalshi, and around 12:30pm from Sawrapara, after Mosharraf Hussain, managing director of large-scale garment manufacturing factory Standard Group, assured the workers of meeting their demands.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)'s Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC-Mirpur) Shahen Shah Mahmud confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
"Before calling off their strikes, the workers protested non-violently in Kalshi and Sawrapara areas," he said.
Until the filing of the report at 3pm, vehicular movement in the areas has become normal again.
However, police have deployed forces in the areas to avoid any further untoward situations, the ADC said.
Workers of several garment factories have been protesting in Savar, and in different parts of Dhaka, since Sunday; protesting against the discrepancies of the newly-announced wage structure.
The government, garment industry owners and workers' representatives have been trying to solve the problem for the last few days. However, they failed to stop the workers from protesting.
The workers took the streets after claiming that authorities have been delaying the implementation of their demands for the past two months.
The government formed a committee to look into the wage discrepancies in the RMG sector; the 10-member body is scheduled to hold its first meeting on Thursday.
